EV towing range calculator

Stop guessing what the trailer costs.

This calculator starts with the thing most planning tools lack: measured towing efficiency from a Rivian R1T Tri-Motor Max Pack pulling a 23-foot Airstream across the country. Use the standard Rivian presets, compare Cybertruck or GM electric truck packs, or type in your own usable kWh.

Range calculator

Estimate EV towing range, then add real-world conditions if you want.

Start with battery size and towing efficiency. The default Airstream number is our real measured average, 1.19 mi/kWh across 4,405 towed miles. Optional wind, temperature, and elevation adjustments are simple planning buffers you can turn on only when you need them.

If both are filled, net elevation overrides the elevation dropdown and calculates the grade effect from ft/mi.

Default: our Rivian Max pack pulling our Airstream, no extra condition adjustment.

Wind, grade, temperature, speed, tire pressure, and charger spacing all matter. The baseline is measured from our real towing data. The optional controls are planning assumptions, useful for building a buffer before the day gets expensive.

Measured spread

The range number is not one number.

The average is useful. The spread is the story. Same truck, same Airstream, wildly different outcomes depending on what the air and the road were doing that day.

Best 100+ mile segment

Bryce Canyon City Supercharger to La Verkin Supercharger (Zion gateway)

1.88 mi/kWh

110.1 miles, about 265 miles of full-pack range at that efficiency.

Hardest 100+ mile segment

Green River RAN to Thousand Lakes RV Park (Torrey)

0.92 mi/kWh

108.1 miles, about 130 miles of full-pack range at that efficiency.

Longest single run

Mount Pleasant IA Tesla SC to Columbia MO RAN

176.5 mi

1.44 mi/kWh, finished as a real charge-to-charge tow leg with the trailer attached.

Two measured trailers

The trailer moves the number as much as the truck.

Behind the same Rivian R1T, two very different trailers, both measured charge to charge. The heavy Airstream and a light little U-Haul 5x8 enclosed box are most of a ton apart in weight, yet the box still gives up nearly as much range, because with a flat front the drag is the price, not the pounds. Pick the U-Haul preset in the calculator to see it.

Our 23 ft Airstream

Heavy travel trailer

1.19 mi/kWh

Measured over 4,405 tow miles, about 168 miles of full-pack range.

U-Haul 5x8 enclosed

Light but boxy

1.57 mi/kWh

Measured over 757 tow miles at 55 to 65 mph, about 221 miles of full-pack range.

Speed is the other lever

Same box, different foot

240 to 150 mi

The same U-Haul ranges from about 240 miles at 55 mph down to 150 at 80, because aerodynamic drag climbs with the square of speed.

What moves range

The trailer is constant. The conditions are not.

Wind

42 miles of full-pack range swing between tailwind and headwind segments.

Grade

24 miles of full-pack range swing between rolling / flat and net climb segments.

Temperature

32 miles of full-pack range swing between mild (70–85°f) and hot (>85°f) temperature buckets.

FAQ

EV towing range, answered

How the calculator works and what moves the number most.

How do you calculate EV towing range?

Multiply usable battery capacity by towing efficiency. Our measured Rivian R1T + Airstream average is 1.19 mi/kWh, so a 141 kWh usable pack estimates to about 168 miles on a full charge. The calculator also accepts custom usable kWh for other EV trucks.

What range should a Rivian R1T Max Pack expect while towing an Airstream?

Our measured full-pack estimate is about 168 miles across 4,405 towing miles. In practice we plan 100 to 120 mile DC fast-charge hops so wind, grade, heat, and charger access do not erase the buffer.

What changes EV towing range the most?

In our measured tow ledger, wind is the biggest visible swing: tailwind segments averaged 1.4 mi/kWh while headwind segments averaged 1.1 mi/kWh, a 42 mile full-pack range swing.

Methodology

Each tow segment is logged from the Rivian dashboard between charge stops. Miles, kWh from the pack, mi/kWh, elevation, wind, temperature, state of charge, and charger receipts are reconciled into source data before every build. The CSV and JSON files are regenerated on deploy.
