Every place the Rivian and the Airstream have parked overnight, scored out of 10, with what we paid, the hookups, what's nearby, and whether a group could stay together. Written for anyone who camps, in a trailer, an RV or a tent. The one answer you will not find on the big review sites is here too: can you charge an EV at the site? This list grows as we go.

EV: a check means the park allowed us to charge the truck at the site pedestal, an X means it is prohibited or there are no hookups, and a question mark means we could not verify the rule, so ask first. Everything else in the table is for any camper.

A tilde marks an estimate rather than a receipt. It shows up on a park we keep going back to, where the nightly rate moves with the season and the figure is our running total across stays.

Staging and shakedown base 63 mi up I-8 from home. Cool mountain air at 3,300 ft, clean 50-amp sites, and enough room that a caravan could stage together. A solid, unfussy launch pad, the kind of place you leave the rig charging and sleep easy before the real driving starts.

Notes

We went all out and got the premium site for the end-of-year celebration with the Airstream group, and it did not disappoint: endless propane for the grill, good views, and comfortable patio chairs. It's a good location where you can bike ride to the bay. The pool area is so nice, they have a restaurant on site, a group meeting room available for groups, and an arcade room. It also has cabins, so if you're traveling with people that don't have RVs, it's perfect. Private showers and bathrooms, which is a must for my 10 rating. Highly recommend.

I just love county parks, so clean and maintained. Great for bike rides, walking the dogs, and camping with tents and RVs. Full-hookup spots, and great for RV groups. County parks are so well taken care of, and everyone is so nice. Great location near bike paths in every direction, right next to the Sweetwater bike path, with a playground and a water playground for extra cost. Walking trails everywhere. Community room and kitchen for big groups. A hidden gem. We liked it enough to book it twice: 5 nights the first time, 5 more on a return stay, $428 across the two.

Walking distance, or take the shuttle, over to Pala Casino, where they have cover-band shows and live music on the casino floor. It's such a blast, especially when you are dancing and can have a drink and walk back to the RV resort. The sites are kept clean and everything is well maintained. The pool and hot tub are so nice on a hot day. The whole Airstream club was comfortable, with a kitchen and an area for events and eating. We first came here with the club, and now we keep coming back, just the two of us, to catch the shows. A good location for the trip home when you just need a quick stop before driving all the way back. They have restaurants at the casino, yummy food, and I can play my $40 and see what happens.

Notes

Pool and hot tubs, a gym, an arcade, a market and coffee counter, an ice cream parlor, and a cantina with a bar. Live music all summer and activities like bingo. Updated bathrooms with nice showers. Sites run in a lot of different shapes and price tiers; the entry sites are tight and the roomy ones cost more. We paid $514 for 4 nights, about $128 a night. Walking distance to Mission Bay, a couple of minutes to Pacific Beach, and a short drive to SeaWorld, the Zoo, and downtown. Fiesta Island and its off-leash dog park sit right across the water. The bay path starts at the gate, so you can ride a bike all the way to Mission Beach and get on the roller coaster at Belmont Park, keep going to Ocean Beach, or head up to La Jolla, which is also a quick drive.

Our take

This is a destination, not a stopover, and it knows it. Concerts all summer, bingo and other activities on the board, a pool and hot tubs, an arcade for the kids, a cantina and an ice cream counter, and staff who are genuinely welcoming. Everyone camping is there to relax and party, so the mood is good. What you trade for that is room. Our site was the smallest we have ever parked in and you are cramped together, though bigger sites exist for more money, so it comes down to what you are willing to pay. At about $128 a night it is not cheap. The bathrooms are updated with nice showers, the mini mart and the bar are good, and the gym is there but it is not the best. People come back year after year, and for some families it is a tradition. Worth saying plainly: at $128.50 a night this is the most expensive night in our whole campground log, and Sweetwater Summit, fifteen miles inland, is a third of that for a bigger site. What the money buys here is the location and the scene, not the space. If you want quiet and room to spread out, go inland. If you want the kids in the arcade, a concert at night, and a bike ride to the roller coaster in the morning, this is the one. One piece of advice we would give anyone towing something long: ask for the site dimensions before you book, not after. Our truck and trailer run about 47 feet together, and the entry sites are not sized with that in mind. We want to come back with an Airstream group.

Heads upOur site was the smallest we have ever parked in, and the rigs sit close together. If you want elbow room, book up to a bigger site class and expect to pay for it.

Notes

Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, a pool, one hot tub, and a game room beside it with a spot to watch movies. Laundry, 24-hour security, and a beach right on De Anza Cove. Bike and pedestrian trails run through the property, including a path that links straight over to Campland. Trader Joe's is about three miles for a real grocery run. The sites are the standout: big enough to spread out, and big enough for a club to park together. One thing you cannot miss: the empty stretch next door looks like wasted space on waterfront this good. It is the old De Anza mobile home park. The residents left by 2016 after a long fight with the city and the land has sat vacant since, and in August 2026 the Coastal Commission approved the De Anza Natural plan, which turns the cove into restored wetlands over a process the city says could run twenty years or more, with a smaller camping and RV footprint kept in the plan. Nothing closes tomorrow, but it is worth knowing what the view across the fence is about.

Our take

Relaxed is the word. The sites are huge, with real space between rigs, which is not something we say often on Mission Bay. It is the sister park to Campland on the Bay and a completely different animal: no party scene, just people at their sites with a campfire going, barbecuing, hanging out. There is a pool and one hot tub, and a game room near it with a place to watch movies. The location is the whole argument. Get on a bike and you can ride to Mission Bay, Fiesta Island, Ocean Beach, or La Jolla. We rode to dinner at the Mission Bay Beach Club, and out to the Fiesta Island dog park, where we got to watch the boat races. We came with the San Diego Airstream Club, which gets a group discount, and three nights ran $268, about $89 a night. Eight out of ten, and the two reasons are the size of the sites and where it puts you.

Heads upThe rack rate climbs fast here, so follow the park on Facebook for coupons and come with a club if you can. Our San Diego Airstream Club group rate worked out to about $89 a night, which is not what you would pay walking up in summer.

A functional Route 66 overnight at the doorstep of Petrified Forest, easy in and out off I-40. Fine for a one-night stop and a caravan would fit, but it is a parking-lot-style layout with little character, hence the middle-of-the-road score. You stay here for the location, not the ambiance.

A frustrating Panhandle overnight. They told us at check-in not to plug the truck in, no EV charging allowed, so the Rivian sat all night and we paid for a Tesla charge at the Buc-ee's 5 mi south the next morning instead. The lot is bare dirt, the staff are fussy about exactly how you position the rig, and the sewer hookup is placed where a normal hose will not reach. See the heads-up below. Functional in a pinch, not one we would book again or send a group to.

Heads upNo EV charging allowed, they told us at check-in, the moment we pulled in, not to plug the truck in. We ended up paying for a Tesla charge at the Buc-ee's down the road the next morning. It's also all dirt, the rules say stay off the grass but there is no grass, it's dirt everywhere. Staff are very specific about how you position the rig in the spot, yet the sewer hookup sits where you cannot reach it without about a 50-foot hose. Bring a long sewer hose and patience.

Better than expected once you are inside. The indoor pool, jacuzzi, and sauna were genuinely great, a rare luxury for a one-night I-40 stop, and the quick west-side OKC access set up the Route 66 run to Tulsa nicely. The one thing that drags it down is how many long-term residents (lifers) live on site, it reads more permanent community than traveler park. Still a solid stop at a fair price, and fine for a small group.

Perfect location when you're visiting Capitol Reef or on the way to Bryce Canyon. A nice resting point with a restaurant (dinner only), and the food was delicious. The campground was well taken care of and the staff was friendly, with a huge gift shop and Jeep rentals on site. There is a barn with picnic tables that is great for camping groups. A family campground, bring the kids and the group. There is so much to do: ATV rentals, bike riding, and you can walk to the stores and restaurants, with shuttles to the resort and the park. Perfect for friends staying in different kinds of camping, all side by side: cabins, hotel rooms, tents, and RV sites, with a Tesla Supercharger nearby. The pool and hot tub look nice but were very busy, so we skipped them and just relaxed under the pines. Rolled in at 1% state of charge and left charged, the location a mile from the park entrance is what you are paying for, and at $75.92 it is fair.

Our take

Pretty location with the Zion rocks right in the background, and close enough to the visitor center that you walk over and catch the shuttle. Walking trails from camp, even a trail to walk your dog, which is rare in national parks. Clean showers and bathrooms, and water to fill the tanks. But the sites have no electricity, water, or sewer; it would be nice to just have power, though you can rough it for one night. Hot, with a lot of wind at night. So easy to catch the shuttle for dinner, and we caught it again at 7 AM for the hike.

Our take

A great base for Vegas at a good price. Clean, well-maintained sites with everything you need: a store, a restaurant, and genuinely nice staff. There are two separate pool-and-hot-tub areas, one adult and one family, so you can pick the speed you want. Security at the entrance, laundry, and mail service. This is the one we keep coming back to: 19 nights across our stays, counting the four nights booked for the end of October. The rate moves with the season and with what is on in town, so treat our total as an estimate rather than a receipt. Three nights in late September ran $284.59, about $95 a night, while four nights over the end of October came to $320.02 with tax, about $80 a night. Same park, same hookups, fifteen dollars a night apart, which is the whole argument for booking Vegas in the shoulder season. If you have an RV and want to do Vegas, this is the place.

Campground FAQ

Camping with an Airstream, answered

How we rate a campground, what makes one good for a 23-foot Airstream or any rig, and charging the truck overnight.

How do you rate the campgrounds?

A single honest 10-point score per stay, plus what we paid, the hookups, what is nearby, and whether the site actually works for a polished 23-foot Airstream and, when it matters, an Airstream group. The log holds 23 stays at an average of 7.7 out of 10, and it grows as we go.

What makes a campground good for towing an Airstream?

Pull-through or back-in sites long enough for the rig without unhitching, a level pad, 30 or 50-amp hookups within reach, and turning room for a twin-axle 23-footer. We note all of it per site so you can tell a tight overnight from a place you would actually stay a few days.

Do you charge the Rivian at campgrounds?

When we can. A 50-amp full-hookup site doubles as overnight Level 2 charging, enough to top the truck off by morning and skip a DC stop the next day. Several legs on the trip ran entirely on overnight campsite charging with no fast-charging at all.
